Forms of treatment and the potential for development in out-of-hospital midwifery care

Against a background of change in Germany’s healthcare system, which is increasingly also affecting obstetrics and therefore having an effect on midwifery, an analysis of freelance midwife activities in the homebirth setting and the potential for innovation is specially important.

The qualitative research represented an extensive comparative investigation among homebirth midwives and their clients.

The results of the research summarise a broad spectrum of features that illustrate the activities of freelanced midwives. Using the example of the area of activity of freelanced midwifes in the sample, it becomes clear that a comprehensive approach to care – addressing the process of pregnancy, birth and the new structuring of the family – is possible. This care chain allows for comprehensive, individual management, tailored to the needs of the client and her family and represents a new paradigm in the provision of health care. Just as clear, from the statements they make, is how much clients appreciate this approach.
